Hey Rocky, where's Bullwinkle....
Wednesday night, Jeff came home from work to find little pieces of wood all on the floor in the dining room and near the kitchen window. First thing came to mind was that someone tried to break in. So he opened the slider & stepped outside to look, and suddenly Rocky the squirrel came bolting out of the house & down the porch steps. Wonderful.
All the wood around the slider is chewed up, the side window in the dining room, a little bit of the kitchen window, and our bow window in the living room. Most of the damage was done to the most expense to replace - slider & bow window. Great.
We both thought we heard a bang here & there.. me in the laundry room, but then i stopped & listened....nothing. The heater somtimes bangs, and because of the cold...sometimes so doesnt the house.. so since there wasnt any other noises... i told myself to relax & continue with the laundry.
A big sign should have been on Tuesday when Jeff came home & the stove was not working. The clock was out so he thought we didnt have power...then he noticed everything else was on. By the time I got home, he had the stove pulled out & saw that the electrical wire was missing a small section. During this time he heard a bang in the attic...listened & then nothing, so he went back to the stove. Stupid us were like well the wire must have gotten stuck in the draw & was hitting the heat part of the stove. But after seeing Rocky, now we know he must have chewed it..because thinking of it, the wires werent melted or burnt. Duh on our part. I guess we both were in denial that something was amiss.
Unfortunately, the insurance company said that we are not covered for this damage. Our friend Arty the lawyer said he can have someone check over our paperwork, but he spoke to an insurance friend, and said most things like this, there arent even any loop holes to try go thru to get the insurance to pay for it. Ok... so why have insurance??? Even if the little guy chomping on the wires were to start a fire, we still wouldnt have been covered. Can you believe that??? Its an intruder.... we didnt let him in.
So it looks ugly. Too much wood is gone to really sand it down, but I guess we will have to do the best we can to smooth it out & re-stain. Jeff took the day off yesterday to clean up the mess. I vaccummed a little bit the night before, but he used the wet/dry vac for all the pieces of wood that were everwhere. He washed down all the wood, washed the kitchen floor (where there are now scratches) washed the fridge, washed the throws that were near the couch and the couch pillows. I left early and washed the kitchen table down, the stove, some wine bottles that were on top of the fridge, threw out the salt & pepper that were in the shakers on the counter, threw the shakers & the knife set in the dishwasher and lysoled everything again. We feel disgusted. And where did the thing pee & poop the whole time?!?!?!?! Yuckieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I dont think we've cleaned enough. We still feel dirty!
Jeff also bought a trap yesterday in case he got in from the attic & decides to come back for another visit.
Jeff also thought he got the stove working again... last night was going to be the first night using the oven since we found the wire chewed... there was heat, but not enough to heat up the pre cooked chicken. So.. at this point, we're aggravated & didnt eat. Jeff had nothing, I had some butterscotch pudding with mini morsals mixed in & a glass of pepsi. Much needed! For the rest of the night, I sat on the floor in the living room & finished my book.
This has been a really downer of week!!!
